Entry from: Panama City, Panama Entry Title: "C****s and Beisbol" Entry: "After an overpriced breakfast in Quito International we flew Avianca (which was a nice airline) to Bogota in Colombia. Quito charges $40 departure each, we felt a bit robbed after paying that when we've been staying in hostels for $5 a night. Bogota's airport was fairly uneventful except for the ridiculous price of an English magazine - $11. We didn't buy it., but Steph has run out of anything to read for the moment. The taxi drivers are very sneaky here, promise you a good price then change it and pretend it was always much higher. We stood our ground and after changing cars a few times got a good deal. They pull the old "your hostel is very bad, my friend has a much better place for you" trick as well. We're staying in Hostal Mamallena in Panama City. It's a small friendly place with a pet dog ... again, and a cat called Gato 2. Very helpful info about all the things to do in Panama too, and you can make pancakes for breakfast! Panama City seems like a nice place, you can see the mix of Indigenous, Spanish, Caribbean and American influence. We walked down to the seafront to see the views before the sunset. Entry from: Hong Kong, China Entry Title: "Hong Kong" Entry: "We arrived at the ferry terminal at Hong Kong Central, a mistake on our part as we could have taken a ferry directly to Kowloon. Instead we caught a taxi and had a long ride through dense traffic. We were staying on Kowloon's main drag, Nathan Road in the Mirador Mansions. The Mansions are a 16 story decrepit building with a scungy shopping complex on the ground floor and dodgy touts hanging about the entrance. The New Garden Hostel was on the 13th floor and when we left the lift we discovered that the hostel's lobby was a tiny wooden desk in the corridor, by the stairs. Our room was on the 10th floor and when we got there we found that the floor was a mixture of apartments, shops, a tailor factory and several other hostels. As we walked down the dirty concrete corridor, we passed laundry drying on coat hangers hung from exposed pipes. The New Garden Hostel had bought several apartments in the building and this one was subdivided into many guest rooms. Our room was about the size of a compartment in a train, had no window and smelt funny. The bathroom was about the size of an airline toilet but much worse, with dripping water from pipes in the roof. There were blood stains on the sheets. But we could have done worse. Entry from: Buenos Aires, Argentina Entry Title: "Zoo Photos" Entry: "The zoological gardens were more than gardens and more than a zoo as these photos will attest. In combination it was a huge site with much to see; taken separately it can not compete with a stand alone garden or zoo. No matter how one sees it, it is a beautiful, calm and quiet respite from the street noises of BA. The two "Wild pets" that we saw almost immediately on entering stumped us as they would not show us their identity cards or passports no matter how many peanuts we offered them - they even refused a Starbucks Cafe Latte! We had assumed from the description on the map given us that they may have been carpinchos an amphibious little guy native to those parts. It wasn't until we got back to Canada and put out an 'all points bulletin' to world travelers (well, a few friends of ours) that we started to get some feedback. The two most well traveled: John A and Michael G quickly confirmed that it was not a carpy-type thingie but rather, the Mara from the Caviidae family. Note: en.wikipedia.org It is native to Brazil. When we saw the hind legs we thought it was a type of pygmy kangaroo crossed somewhere with a beaver, rat and mule!
